The main difference between AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) car chargers lies in the type of current they use to charge a vehicle’s battery.
AC car chargers: These chargers convert the high-voltage alternating current from standard power outlets (typically 120V or 240V) into low-voltage direct current to charge the car’s battery. They require an external power source, such as a household socket, and often come with portable charging cables that can be plugged into different electrical outlets.
DC car chargers: These chargers provide direct current power directly to the car’s battery, bypassing the need for an AC-to-DC conversion. They are generally used to charge electric vehicles (EVs) from designated charging stations. DC chargers can provide higher voltage and power levels, allowing for faster charging times compared to AC chargers.
In summary, AC car chargers convert alternating current from standard power outlets into low-voltage direct current, while DC car chargers provide direct current power without the need for conversion. DC chargers pile are commonly used for electric vehicles and offer faster charging times.
Regarding safety design, electric vehicle (EV) charging station equipment must provide safety, efficiency, and reliability. Level 3 charging, also known as DC fast charging, is the quickest way to charge an electric vehicle. This type of charging can supply power between 80 kW and 240 kW. With a Level 3 DC fast charger, an electric car can be charged up to 80% in just 15 to 60 minutes.
